I’ll admit, tonight, I almost gave up on the last three weeks progress and not write a blog for today. The last hour I battled with the inner voice trying to tell me I had put in enough work, that, I have been creating media and content since 8am and I have done enough. I was using this as justification to not to write a blog entry supplying you with 9 For 30. I almost, for a split second, wasn’t going to write this. I mean who reads this shit anyway? Since you know this not to be the case, for the purpose of tonight’s blog, I want to talk about something known as the “5 Second Rule.” The 5 Second Rule has held great importance in the world of dropping food or ingestibles on a surface rather questionable in cleanness, but, how does this rule apply to other parts of our lives? The rule is based on the premise that there is a short period of time when a question is asked that you have to take action in response. How the 5 Second Rule works Whenever you are supposed to do something, give yourself a count down from 5 to 1 to get up and go do it… For example, you have homework to do but have been fighting doing it and have found yourself procrastinating. Instead of putting it off later and later you simply count down from 5 and by the time you get to 1 you have to get the fuck up and do it.
Pretty simple rule huh? The rule changed my life and I didn’t even know such thing existed when I first started practicing the rule. As a matter of fact, this summer when I moved to Bozeman, I came up with my own rule. Instead of 5 seconds, I only gave myself 3 seconds as I felt 5 gave me more time to not do it. Anytime I found myself not wanting to do something I would count down from 3. This changed my life, so much in fact, that I was going to write a long piece of content about this new rule I made up. Well, after a Google search, there is a book written on the 5 Second Rule already and I was late to the party. I probably will never read the book because I am living the damn rule, but, I am happy to know I am not the only person who has found this technique to deliver results. Supposed to go to the gym but you’re putting it of… 5, 4, 3, get up and get it done! Supposed to get dinner cooked and meals prepped for the week… 5, 4, just do that shit! Homework isn’t due until a later date but you have time to get a jump on it…. 5, you know the drill! Whenever you find yourself struggling to win the inner battle with the voices telling you to go against what provides the best life, just start counting down. 5, 4, 3, …. As I count I like to let the voices telling me to do it roar! After each number I plug in self affirmations to reassure any subconscious doubters that you fucking bet I am going to get up and do whatever task at hand I know is required to win. It’s that simple. My secret is literally counting down like you would to a small child about to be disciplined and acting on the request no matter the squawks from the voices telling you not to. It’s not rock science. It’s effective. Tonight, I did just that, gave myself 5 seconds to make a decision to write a blog or not. You know what I decided on this night… What decisions are you holding yourself back from that you know when performed will have greater rewards than any possible risks? It’s not always easy, it’s worth it. 9 For 30.
