If you have said the words, “I don’t want to get bulky, I want to get toned,” and have found yourself having problems building your body because you are afraid to strength train with heavier weights than the 15lb dumbbells, now is the time to let go of that fear and get into the mindset of doing something new. Lifting weights will not make you bulky or become “manly.” I wish it was that easy. LOL. If that was the case, I would be 200lb of muscle as I have devoted years of my life to building. Every morning I am reminded of my past as my body cracks when my hands reach to the ceiling letting out a big sigh. 26 years old and 20 of that have been spent training, 15 at a level I often can’t comprehend how I did it. The adage, “You don’t know what you got until it’s gone,” is forever a reminder of the physical condition my body once was at the peak of my athletic career.
With the recent injury of a torn ulnar collateral ligament being the latest addition to the list of setbacks, I want to bring light to a topic I feel many of you can resonate with. I’ve heard it all, “He’s injury prone. He can’t handle the training. He’s not cut out for this level of physical abuse.” From age 15 I have been in chronic physical pain. In the 8th grade I endured a football injury tearing my lateral meniscus as well as a rare condition called osteochondritis dissecans, known as OCD, a joint disorder in which cracks form in the articular cartilage and the underlying subchrondral bone. In layman’s terms, OCD is a deep bone bruise that literally kills the bone and no longer is blood supplied to the area, resulting in pain, flaking of the bone, swelling, and catching and locking during movement. After a meniscal repair surgery of 5 pins and two screws and a drill hole into my bone marrow to resupply the area with blood, I crutched around for a few months on a high school campus not gimp friendly. Beyond the hype and high of shotgunning a dry scoop of Blood Rounds, smelling salts, jamming to loud music, and yelling “light weight baby” is a much more important key to your success. Mental preparation might possibly be the most overlooked and under talked about aspect of exercise. Since we are on the topic of pre-workout, let’s start there. Thoughts alone have the power to manifest both negative and positive realities. Maybe you have heard the saying, “If you can see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hand.” The unconscious and conscious thinking patterns of the mind will develop a set of feelings attached to past, present, and future events. If you feel you continually attract the same feelings of anxiety, fear, doubt, rejection, abandonment, anger, resentment, and chaos, continually finding yourself trying to control what is keeping you out of control, you are not alone.
From birth to now, events have shaped the feelings you are addicted to creating the same patterns your mind finds comfort with, releasing a neurochemical high to fulfill those set of feelings that keep you suppressed, anxious, and in an energy space to find what is familiar. Years of suppression and repression have hard wired your mind to bring about the same feelings over and over again, because, that is what is familiar. Past trauma that goes unresolved will be pushed down into the subconscious mind. The often result is poor eating habits, unfulfilled relationships, closure to romantic partners, codependency, money problems, debt, weight gain or loss, self sabotage, and a multitude of outcomes which fulfill the brain high keeping you disappointed, broke, out of shape, and in the same place year after year. Now, most of you reading this do not have 48 pounds of fat to lose, but, can you begin to understand the long game of nutrition and weight loss by breaking down these numbers? For starters, you will need to calculate your BMR (basal metabolic rate) : Rate at which your body burns energy at rest. The best way to calculate your BMR is an online calculator or doing an InBody assessment. For the purpose of this article, we will not over complicate this by giving you a math equation. Consult a health coach or professional if you require additional assistance. Once you have determined your BMR, you will know the number of calories your body burns daily through metabolism. This is how you will determine how to achieve a caloric deficit of 500 calories daily. Next, instead of crash dieting, limiting yourself to only eating certain foods, and making losing weight seem like a chore instead of something natural, make a plan. It’s rather easy. Make a list of the healthy protein, carb, fat, and micronutrient sources you like to eat. Figure out how many times per day you will be eating. Measure out your macronutrient sources (protein, carbs, fats) to fit your daily caloric goal total. Stick to your regiment. Be consistent. Buy into the process. And begin to develop a lifestyle of eating, not a fad trend of unsustainable tricks.
